First and foremost if you have a business then you need a website, if you are planning on opening a business make sure your website goes live first as it is your single best advertising resource for your business. In many cases, if you are operating your business without a website you are missing a massive amount of business, to put this into perspective for you let’s say you open your business and take out a full page ad in your local paper.
Newspaper Advertising vs. Creating a Website
What does a one full page ad cost? In most cases, this is over $2,000. for a one page ad.
Depending on what you want in a website you can get a few pages with content and images for the same $2,000. and it will be live for one year, then your hosting will come due again and for a small site, it is around $100. per year.
Which do you think will be better for your business, One page – One day or several pages for 365 days, If you throw in some basic optimization on the website it is a no brainer or at least should be. Yet I see many times that a company forgoes the website and takes out that one-page listing, then a few months later is shopping for a website for several hundred dollars and not wanting to really pay that either.
What can I expect with my website?
Reality: A website will perform only as good as the person that develops it, you need to have a basic understanding of want you your website to do as there are many variables that come into play in order to achieve high rankings on the search engines, depending on the type of business you are in will greatly impact your rankings. Someone that has a good understanding of organic search engine optimization can provide you with some good insight on what you can expect realistically with a website. In many cases, though you should have no problem achieving local or regional rankings for your business which in most cases is what you need.
Reality: A business today not only needs a website but needs to use social media, ie. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google business and more. Actually Google business is extremely important for any business as it will get your online business website noticed much quicker than most other resources without a lot of effort.
How about Google Adsense or Adsense Express? Personally, I would put your money into what you can control, I ran an experiment with my lodging business for a month with Adsense Express spending about $600. on a listing for mobile only, I did not see one customer from this advertising and the only calls were from people that wanted rooms several hundred miles away, when people call you your cost gets high, one call was about 8 bucks and the other was $6 bucks which are high in any one’s book. I set a limit of 40 miles on my listing I thought but they have not worked out the kinks I guess so it cost me $14.00, then depending on the time of the day and how much demand is on the keywords used your cost per click to be from .50 to several dollars. Either way, I did not get one customer from this advertising, NADA, Zilch a big fat Zero and to justify this type of expense you need to do 3 to 4 times that in business. My website, on the other hand, cost me about 200. bucks per year in hosting fees and brings me over 100 k in business a year some years more and never less.
Banner Advertising / Text Advertising
What about Banner and Text Advertising? Again personally unless it is a fixed priced on a high volume website, I do not think it is worth the money you will spend and I would put that money into optimizing your website or building your social presence, ie Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and others.
In short, if you are looking for an easy way to bring your business a ton of business it is not going to happen, Your best way is via a website and social media but this also requires some effort on your part either in the form of capital investment or learning it yourself.
