With over 30 years in business myself I do understand business, additionally I have been online now for over 14 years creating an online presence for customers and our own businesses alike utilizing what I have learned both online and off. Today I use online advertising as my main source of advertising to build my businesses both online and offline. We have written many articles on how to advertise online over the years and have seen many companies change the way they advertise but still today many small businesses use the old ways to build business and simply wander why their business is lagging. Still many others hire qualified people to create them a website and think with a website they should see millions of visitors and blame the designer when they do not. It is important as a business owner that you learn the basics of having an online business so that you do not make the same mistakes and then you can actually build your business.
Over the years that I have been in business many of my customers expect instant results and I take the time to go over what is expected and the work that is involved though with many the results are the same, mainly because not only of their lack of understanding but that they want everything online for free.
Let me tell you a true story about a customer for which I did a website for a few years back, I will not say the business they were in or even the location for reasons that I want to explain the shortfall they have.
When the customer contacted me to do a website for them they wanted a website to encompass several pages and only wanted to spend at first $1,000. They wanted it optimized, custom design and us to write all of the content of course I informed them that for that price I would only do maybe a couple pages and that would only be a static site. Then I proposed a 4 page cms website done using word press where we write the content and optimized it the cost would be a couple thousand, well he got back with me a week later and asked if we could get him ranked for certain keywords which he provide and after checking rankings for competition on those keywords I said we could do that.
Gaining an Online Presence
Upon completion of the job and within about 45 days the desired rankings were attained and he was happy, additionally I set up a google place page for him. I informed him that we could do a keyword search for him on other keywords that could be useful and he was not interested at the time, I informed him that incorporating social networks, writing articles for his site incorporating various keywords, writing articles for other websites and linking to his are all important in building his website rankings and he said his secretary would take care of it.
A year later I noticed that he had expanded his business moving to new areas an went with Yellow pages to created him a web presence for the new area he expanded to, this was at cost of $100. per month. I asked him how was business going in the new area as I saw that he went with this other company for the new area. He said that he had the website with them for several month and had not received any business so I asked him why he had not called me to which he stated that he only received several jobs from his main website and could not be found on certain keywords, so I pulled out my information on the job and showed it to him and the keywords he wanted rankings for were not on the list he gave me and he did not want to spend additional money.
1. This company ranked at the top of the search engines for all keywords that were given to me, I am not talking the second page but the top of the first page.
2. Many people are just like this customer, they get what they ask for but assume that it will cover all.
Since this company was a good customer I informed him I would adjust the keywords and incorporate rankings for the new area and would not charge him unless he got results. He agreed and I made the modifications and informed the customer that the next time Google updated which may take up to 3 weeks since the content on his website had not been updated since I put up the website he should see some top rankings. About three weeks later I called to let him no that he was not top ranked for those keywords and I would call back in a couple weeks to see if he was receiving calls. He called me back and informed me he was average about 40-50 calls per day and could not believe it all of which found him from the website.
Maintaining Online Rankings for your Website
Now to put this into perspective this company makes usually over 8k per job and did not want to spend a couple hundred dollars to change keywords. Even now after he saw the results earlier and made literally a couple hundred thousand off the updates does not see the value of maintaining his website.
The above story is true and I see all of the time small businesses either do not see how to butter their bread or they see that the bread is being buttered but do not want to buy more butter.
The above goes with advertising, you can take a horse to water but you cannot make them drink.
